Remembering the Life of Vincent van Gogh

There are many painters who over the last two hundred years who have influenced the art world with their work, but many arguments could be made that none within that period have been as important or as influential as van Gogh. Van Gogh was born in 1953 in the Netherlands. During his early years he worked as an art dealer but at one point in time tried to turn his back on the art community to follow what he believed was a calling to the ministry. However, he would not succeed in the studies necessary to pursue theology, and instead began working as a missionary. This was in 1879 in Belgium, and it was during his time there that he began to experience a true passion for art. His brother was the one responsible for pushing him to pursue art as a vocation. It is one of the most interesting pieces of Vincent van Gogh trivia to know that without his brother Theo, this great artist whose works are some of the most valuable in existence may never have begun painting.

Van Gogh has many famous paintings which are considered among the most important masterpieces of the art world, but of all these, the most well known is possibly “Starry Night”, which was painted in 1889. The artist is also well known for an episode in which he cut off his own ear, an incident judged by many to be a product of mental illness. Although the suggested diagnoses differ, whatever his illness, it caused a depression which eventually led to his suicide in 1890.
